Final Conference

The e-EAV project is coming to an end and a final conference will be held in Brussels on 11th December 2014. Fifteen international experts will come to discuss the output and results of the four Work Streams (WSs) of the project. The experts will link their analyses to their work and studies in order to identify potential developments for future action. More information

Background of the project

Over the last twenty years, in Europe, xenophobia, racism and discrimination have known a spectacular growth for a complex set of factors such as globalization, migration, and weaknesses of the European Union as a political subject especially in those countries that, since 2008, have suffered from the economic crisis. This trend affects even some mainstream parties which have made use of xenophobic or racist expressions to strengthen consensus. Nevertheless some movements and parties have made the construction of others as enemies and the opposition between US and THEM the core of their political programs, action and speech.

These parties and movements are labeled ‘populist’, a controversial concept that is largely abused by the media, but that can still be of heuristic value in order to analyze a common political trend in various different organizations (the ‘othering’ and the ‘hate speech’). In particular, new media platforms and social networking sites have been seen by populist organizations as a means to promote their hate speech towards the ‘other’ and new forms of proselytism. Race, gender, disabilities and sexual orientation have been alternatively used as a basis to discriminate or marginalise the ‘other’, and media has been used as sounding board.

In this context, the main purpose of the project is to contrast new populism and racism transmitted through digital media and social networks by promoting young people's awareness towards violent media contents and empowering them through civic engagement (or also e-engagement) and media/digital literacy.


The specific objectives of the project are:

  • mapping populism in Europe and providing a picture of the main populist and racist organizations operating in seven European countries;
  • analyzing populist communication strategies to understand how populist organizations have been appropriating new media, in the last years, to spread their violent messages towards the 'other';
  • deconstructing populist hate speech towards the 'other' and raising young people's and minorities' awareness: through the analysis of media produced by populist organisations, the aim is to deconstruct stereotypes relating to race, gender, disabilities and sexual orientation, and make young people and minorities aware of how new media misrepresent them;
  • empowering young people through e-engagement: coherently with media literacy education perspectives, which emphasizes people's empowerment rather than media censorship, the aim is to play on a participatory and active approach to promote children's voice appropriation and media literacy skills;
  • providing teachers' training about media literacy and populism/racism to reinforce and amplify the project's impact, and developing an online environment with resources on new media, hate speech towards the 'other' and racism.

To achieve these aims researchers from seven European partner institutions work together on research, development and implementation of training tools and resources.
